News media has a significant influence on American citizens' lives. People rely a lot on the information received from the media, even though it may be partially accurate. In contrast with traditional news media, when things were much more straightforward, transparent, and honest, nowadays, there is so much unclear information out there that creates a vague and contradictory image of the government and politics. Since the traditional news media started to be owned by different corporations and organizations, the news has been shaped to favor a particular political party. It is acceptable that citizens have different political opinions because we are not the same, but when there is misleading and misinformation from news media, that is a serious problem. It does not help our society; contradictory, it promotes confusion and hostility among citizens.

Most people need more time or skills to research facts, and they place significant trust and confidence in the news media to relay accurate information. I agree that citizens are uninformed about the government's standing and wait until a major issue shakes our society to voice their concerns or opinions. In 2018, Greenberg and Page stated,” individual Americans do not care a great deal about politics and are rather poorly informed, unstable in their views, and not much interested in the political process “(p. 10). Citizens are tired and frustrated with political uniformity, discouraging them from participating in the political process. But how can we change this? It is very complex. More restrictions and legal sanctions must be imposed on news channels and stations that report fake news. In addition, citizens must be accurately informed about the facts affecting our society and the political leaders' involvement in governance so they can make well-informed voting decisions.

Here, in the state of Florida, one of the main barriers was the clause that nurse practitioners must work on the sponsorship of a physician or within close proximity of a physician. That has been relaxed by legislation that says only nurse can work in most sectors of healthcare, without oversight of a physician, this allows APRNs autonomy in a medspa, primary care clinics and/or even telemedicine when working independently and as an entrepreneur.

Since June of 2020, Florida operates under “Full practice”policy, which allows nurses that have proof of at least 3000 clinical hours of experience and graduate level pharmacology and differential diagnosis courses, the privilege to operate autonomously in primary care, med spas and even telemedicine under this regulation. This is considered to be the gold standard as APRNs are now able to register as an Autonomous Advanced Practice Registered Nurse and practice to the full extent of their role (Fla. BON, 2023)

With just just three short years ago, APRNs had to work under the supervision or sponsorship of a physician that was either either working in the practice or had a vested interest in a clinic where the APRN is practicing. Some states may also hold a prescriptive regulation or the APRN whereas they can only order certain schedules and medications. In some instances there may be pushback from physicians who do not co-sign the concept of nurse practitioners and or having the privileges that they are allowed believing that they are not trained like physicians. In some communities nurse practitioners may not be a choice of patients to be examined by and may just prefer their doctor instead.

For midwives in Florida, some of the barriers include the need to have a supervisory agreement with a Florida licensed physician for post graduate supervisory hours A lack of recognition as primary care providers on Medicaid and Medicare and private insurance company provider panels and other restrictions. (Hastings, et al, 2018)

CRNAs have barriers such a lack of fair reimbursement by third-party, payers,  stating that they are not trained on the same skill level as physicians and failure of some of the other surgical groups or colleagues to recognize CRNAs as board certified to administer anesthesia. (Toney, 2023)

Rep. Cary Pigman (R-Sebring) and Sen. Jeff Brandes (R-St. Petersburg) joined members of the interest groups for APRNs the Florida Association of Nurse Anesthetists (https://www.fana.org/)and the Florida Nurse Practitioner Network (https://fnpn.enpnetwork.com/) in making new legislation that forwards, the causes nurse practitioners and pushes for more independence for them as well.

annotated

For this assessment, you will develop a Word document or an online resource repository of at least 12 annotated professional or scholarly resources that you consider critical for the audience of your safety improvement plan to understand or implement to ensure the success of the plan

Introduction

Communication in the health care environment consists of an information-sharing experience whether through oral or written messages (Chard & Makary, 2015). As health care organizations and nurses strive to create a culture of safety and quality care, the importance of interprofessional collaboration, the development of tool kits, and the use of wikis become more relevant and vital. In addition to the dissemination of information and evidence-based findings and the development of tool kits, continuous support for and availability of such resources are critical. Among the most popular methods to promote ongoing dialogue and information sharing are blogs, wikis, websites, and social media. Nurses know how to support people in time of need or crisis and how to support one another in the workplace; wikis in particular enable nurses to continue that support beyond the work environment. Here they can be free to share their unique perspectives, educate others, and promote health care wellness at local and global levels (Kaminski, 2016).You are encouraged to complete the Determining the Relevance and Usefulness of Resources activity prior to developing the repository. This activity will help you determine which resources or research will be most relevant to address a particular need. This may be useful as you consider how to explain the purpose and relevance of the resources you are assembling for your tool kit. The activity is for your own practice and self-assessment, and demonstrates course engagement.

Professional Context

Nurses are often asked to implement processes, concepts, or practices—sometimes with little preparatory communication or education. One way to encourage sustainability of quality and process improvements is to assemble an accessible, user-friendly tool kit for knowledge and process documentation. Creating a resource repository or tool kit is also an excellent way to follow up an educational or in-service session, as it can help to reinforce attendees’ new knowledge as well as the understanding of its value. By practicing creating a simple online tool kit, you can develop valuable technology skills to improve your competence and efficacy. This technology is easy to use, and resources are available to guide you.

Scenario

For this assessment, build on the work done in your first three assessments and create an online tool kit or resource repository that will help the audience of your in-service understand the research behind your safety improvement plan pertaining to a specific patient safety issue and put the plan into action.

instructions

Using Google Sites, assemble an online resource tool kit containing at least 12 annotated resources that you consider critical to the success of your safety improvement initiative. These resources should enable nurses and others to implement and maintain the safety improvement you have developed. It is recommended that you focus on the 3 or 4 most critical categories or themes with respect to your safety improvement initiative. For example, for an initiative that concerns improving workplace safety for practitioners, you might choose broad themes such as general organizational safety and quality best practices; environmental safety and quality risks; individual strategies to improve personal and team safety; and process best practices for reporting and improving environmental safety issues.Following the recommended scheme, you would collect 3 resources on average for each of the 4 categories focusing on a specific patient safety issue. Each resource listing should include the following:

  • An APA-formatted citation of the resource with a working link.
  • A description of the information, skills, or tools provided by the resource.
  • A brief explanation of how the resource can help nurses better understand or implement the safety improvement initiative pertaining to a specific patient safety issue.
  • A description of how nurses can use this resource and when its use may be appropriate.

Remember that you must make your site “public” so that your faculty can access it. Check out the Google Sites resources for more information. Here is an example entry:

  • Merret, A., Thomas, P., Stephens, A., Moghabghab, R., & Gruneir, M. (2011). A collaborative approach to fall prevention. Canadian Nurse, 107(8), 24–29.
    • This article presents the Geriatric Emergency Management-Falls Intervention Team (GEM-FIT) project. It shows how a collaborative nurse lead project can be implemented and used to improve collaboration and interdisciplinary teamwork, as well as improve the delivery of health care services. This resource is likely more useful to nurses as a resource for strategies and models for assembling and participating in an interdisciplinary team than for specific fall-prevention strategies. It is suggested that this resource be reviewed prior to creating an interdisciplinary team for a collaborative project in a health care setting.

Additionally, be sure that your plan addresses the following, which corresponds to the grading criteria in the scoring guide. Please study the scoring guide carefully so you understand what is needed for a distinguished score.

  • Identify necessary resources to support the implementation and continued sustainability of a safety improvement initiative pertaining to a specific patient safety issue.
  • Analyze the usefulness of resources to the role group responsible for implementing quality and safety improvements focusing on a specific patient safety issue.
  • Analyze the value of resources to reduce patient safety risk related to a specific patient safety issue.
  • Present reasons and relevant situations for use of resource tool kit by its target audience.
  • Communicate in a clear, logically structured, and professional manner that applies current APA style and formatting.

Example Assessment: You may use the following example to give you an idea of what a Proficient or higher rating on the scoring guide would look like but keep in mind that your tool kit will focus on promoting safety with medication administration. Note that you do not have to submit your bibliography in addition to the Google Site; the example bibliography is merely for your reference.

To submit your online tool kit assessment, paste the link to your Google Site in the assessment submission box.Example Google Site: You may use the example found on the Assessment 4: Google Sitesreading list, Resources for Improved Heparin Infusion Safety, to give you an idea of what a Proficient or higher rating on the scoring guide would look like for this assessment but keep in mind that your tool kit will focus on promoting safety with medication administration.Note: If you experience technical or other challenges in completing this assessment, please contact your faculty member.

Competencies Measured

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the course competencies through the following assessment scoring guide criteria:

  • Competency 1: Analyze the elements of a successful quality improvement initiative.
    • Analyze the usefulness of resources to the role group responsible for implementing quality and safety improvements focusing on a specific patient safety issue.

Healthcare in the United States and Around the World

In the lecture this week on health care in the US, hopefully you gained a general overview into how our system works and the way we pay for it.  What is your opinion on our current system? Is it working well for Americans or do you see any areas that are in need of improvement?  If so what are they specifically and how can we solve those issues?  Be sure to address any potential issues with your “solution” since we know nothing this complicated is solved easily! If you think it’s working well, please point out specifically why you think so.

1.The economic and human costs associated with Alzheimer’s disease have prompted various research studies into the matter. A key topic of research and evaluation is the family’s role or obligation in caring for Alzheimer’s patients, especially parents. Such studies need to incorporate ethical considerations as they involve human beings, sensitive and vulnerable medical and care information, and contribute to knowledge development of the matter; thus, they should be done in the right way to improve the credibility and reliability of the information in the research. Ethical considerations are guidelines and principles that guide research and ensure the research process does not violate any human rights or academic regulations.

Martinez et al. (2022) conducted a qualitative study to understand the dynamics of caregiving of patients with Alzheimer’s within the Latino community because of their emphasis on familism. The study conducted interviews as its primary data collection method, which mandated various ethical considerations. Therefore, Martinez et al. obtained approval from their university’s Institutional Review Board, and informed consent was obtained before the interview. In another study to understand the caregiver’s perception of the unmet palliative care needs in Iranian Alzheimer’s patients, Ashrafizadeh et al. (2021) conducted a qualitative study. In this study, the authors mention that they incorporated various ethical considerations, including approval by the respective university’s Ethics committee. Additionally, they incorporated the voluntary nature of participation, obtained informed written consent forms and anonymity of the participants, and informed them of their right to withdraw from the study at any point. Further, they ensured the confidentiality of the information provided by the participants and guaranteed of using the said information for the sole purpose of the research.

In a cross-sectional study that involved fifty formal caregivers and fifty informal caregivers of Alzheimer’s disease patients, Sołtys & Tyburski (2020) sought to understand the predictors of mental health problems among these caregivers. The authors ensured that all surveyed caregivers willingly agreed to participate, and an ethics committee approved the study. Also, participants provided informed consent. Ashrafizadeh et al. (2021) ethical approach was relatively different, as the key ethical considerations were approval and the participant’s rights. This is seen in how the study guaranteed anonymity by providing nicknames for the participants that also assured confidentiality of the information provided. The participants were also assured of the publication of the results. At the same time, the authors obtained both oral and written consent to ensure the participants understood their involvement, including their right to withdraw from the study. Ethical considerations are similar as long as they involve human participants, even through virtual communication. Rodríguez-Mora et al conducted their interviews virtually but also had to seek informed consent and approval, and in this case, ensure no harm came to the participants by upholding the containment measures as the study was conducted during the recent pandemic.

2. Ethical approaches in research studies entail setting principles that help achieve the goal of research designs and practices. The approaches help the researchers to achieve a code of conduct when interacting with people to collect data. The primary goals of any short or comprehensive research entail enhancing the research validity, maintaining scientific or academic integrity, and acknowledging researchers who performed various research earlier. These practices are mainly for the research conducted using printed or recorded data sources.

Human research entails comprehensive ethical considerations, with voluntary participation being one of them. There is no pressure or compulsion used on any research participants to participate. Everyone enrolled in the study can stop at any time without feeling obligated to continue (Newman et al., 2021). Participants cannot be coerced into justifying leaving the study. As a result, it is critical to make it evident to participants that declining to participate will not have any detrimental effects.

Another consideration is whether participants provided informed consent and where the data was collected. The prospective participants should be provided with and comprehend the information necessary for making a participation decision (Newman et al., 2021). This includes information about the study’s advantages, hazards, funding, and institutional endorsement. Participants should be given a text to read and asked if they have any questions before proceeding. They can initial or sign the consent form if they are willing to participate. When working with particularly vulnerable groups of people, remember that this might not be enough to obtain informed consent.

Further confidentiality must be integrated into research by granting all participants the right to privacy. The researchers must protect participants’ data for a long provided they hold it (Horton & Lucassen, 2023). this consideration should be maintained when the data is collected anonymously. Assumptions such as research process grant confidentiality automatically grants confidentiality should not be taken (Horton & Lucassen, 2023). Some research designs are not conducive to confidentiality, but it is essential to make all attempts and inform participants of the risks involved. Therefore, achieving confidentiality should be explicitly planned for and met by the researchers.

In conclusion, ethical approaches to conducting research should entail observing a code of conduct that enhances research validity when collecting, storing, and interpreting data. Academic integrity should be considered when dealing with records. In human research, participants should be allowed to provide data voluntarily. They should be informed of the research details before being subjected to the research participation. Confidentiality of personal information should be significantly upheld even when research designs do not appear to favor confidentiality. Thus, researchers must ensure that research validity is enhanced by taking the ideal measures of research ethics.
