Subject: Nurse Staffing
Part 2
#2
Safe nurse staffing affects my everyday practice as a nurse for several reasons. Safe staffing means adequate staffing to be fully attentive to patients and efficiently complete every patient’s daily needs. Aside from my everyday practice, the health promotion topic I chose to decrease the number of adults addicted to opioids relates to the topic of safe nurse staffing as well. Some patients require total care on the floors in some scenarios, while others can go to the bathroom and feed themselves. Keeping this in mind, we may dismiss some signs of opioid addiction in those patients. The more patients we add to our workload, the less we watch their almost every move.
From what I learned on this site, a few things are to address this issue. There are staffing committees, mandated nurse-patient ratios, and mandated disclosure of staff levels (ANA, 2017). These are all valid actions to be aware of the staffing situation, but there is always more we can do together. As a professional nurse, I would first go to my chain of command within my hospital. My hospital staff, even the higher-ups, have been very present in how we feel as nurses and what we must do within 12 hours. I would also develop a group of nurses who feel the same way and want to see a change. We could present our argument to those who will listen.
Part 2-
The signs of someone experiencing burnout are less attentive patient care, complaining, being exhausted at work, and having a change of attitude toward those around them. From my experience, this is what I have noticed in others. The article states, “Simple self-care strategies for combatting burnout include getting sufficient rest and exercise, engaging in relaxation techniques such as meditation, focusing on non-work-related social activities such as hobbies or volunteering, limiting exposure to communications technology, and organizing one’s priorities while advocating for flexibility. Attitude adjustment, emotional support from loved ones and counseling professionals, and self-reflection about specific stressors can help as well” (Rholetter, 2024).
Hello Class,
In this New York Times article, by Ashley Southall, she reports on a couple who were accused of exploiting loopholes in the foster care system to traffic children. The couple allegedly used their status as foster parents to gain access to vulnerable children, whom they then exploited for sex trafficking purposes. Officials highlighted the systemic failures that allowed the couple to continue their activities unnoticed for an extended period. The case highlights the need for stronger oversight and reforms in the foster care system to protect at-risk children (Southall, 2022).
The article brings to light the critical issue of sex trafficking within the foster care system. Children in the foster care system are a vulnerable population and are at high risk for exploitation due to multiple determinants of health which include socioeconomic status (living situation), family stability (lack of stable support system), and access to healthcare. The current system has failed this vulnerable population and the abuse continues (Southall, 2022 & ACF, 2022).
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) emphasize the importance of addressing human trafficking and protecting vulnerable populations. SDG 5 (Eliminate violence against women and children) and SDG 16 (Violence) are particularly relevant, as they aim to eliminate exploitation and trafficking, and promote inclusive societies with access to justice for all (UN 2024 & WHO 2024).

Hello class,
The article chosen for this week’s discussion is from the national newspaper The New York Times. The title of the article is Why Oral Hygiene Is Crucial to Your Overall Health, written by Hannah Seo on April 6, 2023. The author of the article describes the importance of oral health and health issues that are linked to bad oral health. Inside, a mouth is dark, warm, and wet, which is a perfect place for bacteria to thrive (Seo, 2023). Health issues linked to oral health are gingivitis and periodontitis. Periodontal disease can increase the risks of other diseases like diabetes, pneumonia, cardiovascular disease, pregnancy complications, and dementia (Seo, 2023).

Oral diseases are among the most common noncommunicable diseases worldwide, affecting an estimated 3.5 billion people (WHO, n.d.). Oral disease affects the most vulnerable and disadvantaged populations, with people of low socioeconomic status (WHO, n.d.). In 2019, 3 out of 4 people were affected living in middle-income countries, and 380 billion US dollars was spent on the main oral diseases (WHO, n.d.). On average, 34 million school hours are lost each year because of unplanned dental care, and over $45 billion in US productivity is lost each year due to untreated dental disease (CDC, n.d.). Poor oral health among some groups of people is partly due to health disparities (CDC, n.d.). As of 2024, 57 million Americans live in a dental health professional shortage, and about 67% of the shortage areas are in rural communities (CDC, n.d.). Examples of health disparities are untreated cavities, which are about twice as common among working-age adults with no health insurance coverage (43%) compared with those who have private health insurance coverage (18%) (CDC, n.d.). Untreated cavities were also three times as common among non-Hispanic Black older adults (28%) and more than two times as common among Mexican American older adults (24%) compared to non-Hispanic White older adults (9%) (CDC, n.d.).
Oral health is mostly thought of as a specialty healthcare professionals do not specialize in and are cared for only by dental providers. Some in the health profession education leadership may not be aware that oral diseases are associated with other health problems, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and dementia (Gill et al., 2022). Oral health is an important topic that needs to be addressed in health professional schools. If health professional schools feel like they lack the expertise to teach the topic, partnerships can be made with dental providers or educators (Gill et al., 2022). Collaborations can be made between both specialties to treat oral diseases and reduce the risk of other health conditions related to untreated oral disease.
