Application of Epidemiology

Investigate population health and epidemiological data to learn about prevalent disease trends within your geographic region. Compare and contrast your findings with disease rates and trends in a different geographic area of your choosing.

Statistics from valid, reliable sources such as professional population health-focused organizations, governmental agencies, local and state health departments, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are appropriate sources to validate assessment findings.

Include the following sections (detailed criteria listed below and in the grading rubric)

  1. Prevalent Infectious and Chronic Diseases
    1. Describe the selected geographic region.
    2. Identify the prevalent infectious and chronic diseases in the region.
    3. Compare and contrast the prevalence of those diseases in a separate geographic region of your choosing, noting similarities and differences.
    4. Discuss the variables that contribute to the noted similarities and differences.
    5.  Provide an in-text citation from one scholarly source to support your writing.
  2. Application of the Epidemiological Model

    3. Identify and explain one epidemiological model that will be applied to the selected disease (e.g., Epidemiological Triangle, Web of Causation, or another legitimate epidemiological model).
    4. Apply the epidemiological model to the selected disease in a well-developed, comprehensive manner, addressing the entire model.
    5. Provide an in-text citation from one scholarly source to support your writing.
  3. Levels of Prevention
    1. Explain the levels of prevention used within population health practice.
    2. Discuss one primary prevention to address the disease.
    3. Discuss one secondary prevention to address the disease.
    4. Discuss one tertiary prevention to address the disease.
    5. Provide an in-text citation from one scholarly source to support your writing.
  4. Reflection
    1. Describe how the advanced practice nurse can monitor the application and efficacy of the prevention strategy.
    2. Discuss how you will apply the identified prevention strategies in your practice.
    3. Reflect on what you have learned from this assignment.

CASE STUDY

Mason is a 55-year-old homeless man who you are seeing today for the first time. He is a smoker and states that he has frequent colds and a routine morning cough. He used to be short of breath just walking up hills, but he now has difficulty breathing with everyday activities and is having trouble finding food because he cannot walk very far. He just wants medicine to help him survive on the streets. On examination, you find him using his accessory muscles to breathe. His vital signs are 99°, 100 beats per minute, 28 respirations/min., and blood pressure 140/90. Breath sounds are distant with end-expiratory wheezes. He has a slight barrel chest and neck vein distention.

CASE STUDY

Calvin is a 36-year-old lawyer who is coming in today for a worsening cough over the past four days. He has had some yellow sputum sporadically throughout the day; he says he has felt hot but has not taken his temperature. He has a history of asthma and has been using his Proventil inhaler every 2 to 3 hours for the past 3 to 4 days. He has no other medication. He says that other than the cough, he feels a little fatigued, and he notices that his energy level is less when he plays hockey with his men’s league twice a week.  His SaO2 is 96%, HR 102, and BP 144/82. He has bilateral wheezes posteriorly on inspiration, worse at the base.

Health Promotion Proposal, Part 1

Health Promotion Proposal, Part 1

Description

Over the duration of this course, you will submit a scholarly PowerPoint “Health Promotion Program Proposal,”

addressing existing nursing knowledge related to health promotion and a written proposal.

In the written proposal, you will also develop a health promotion program to meet the health needs of a vulnerable

population in your potential concentration area or community. The PowerPoint portion is your presentation of that proposal.

The proposal must demonstrate graduate school-level writing and critical analysis. The final version of

your proposal is due in week 8.

For this assignment you will submit Part One of your proposal, detailing a health problem that is

prevalent within your selected group and demonstrating your research of health promotion strategies for

addressing this specific health problem. At this point, you already developed in your discussions the core ideas of the topic contained in this assignment. You will use the same information, but it won’t be a copy-and-paste exercise. The purpose is that you enhance your ideas with the comments and outcomes of the weekly discussions and previous evaluations.

Lesson 6

  1. Conduct a rapid critical analysis of the five (5) articles (use the articles used in discussion 5).
  2. Title the discussion with the PICOT question.
  3. Initial post: Your post should be within a range of 150-200 words and answer the following questions.
    1. Choose one of the research studies in the Matrix table (Appendix G).
    2. Provide a brief overview of what the article was trying to do (i.e., the problem).
    3. What is the type of the study( experimental, cohort, case-study)?
    4. What was the purpose of the study?
    5. Describe the sample (who are the participants, how they were selected). Setting (where it happen).
    6. What is the source of the data?  (was a survey, intervention, observation, interviews).
    7. What were the results? (major findings) (look at the discussion, what was learned).
    8. Limitations (who funded the research, was the sample too small).

APPRAISAL OF THERAPEITIC MODALITY

Appraisal of Therapeutic Modalities of Care

Carefully consider one of the topics addressed this week:

  • Telepsychiatry
  • Hallucinogenic therapy
  • Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
  • Pharmacogenomics

Many of these modalities are relatively new to the psychiatric treatment realm.  It is important to consider the pros and cons of each therapeutic modality as well as its applicability to certain groups of patients when determining its usefulness in your practice.  The purpose of this assignment is to identify research that has been done with one or more of these modalities and determine the quality of the research.  Locate one article describing research with one or more of these modalities as a form of treatment for a group of selected patients.  Answer the following questions using this template.

  • Describe the study and its purpose.
  • Describe the results of the study.
  • Discuss whether you found the results of the study to be helpful.
  • Based on the findings in this study, would you consider this as a treatment modality?  Why? or Why not?

Include examples from the article to support your responses and make sure your responses reflect depth and synthesis of the material.  Please upload the article and the completed template with your review as separate documents to the assignment area clearly labeled so they can easily be located for grading.
