EXERCISE #1 – ETHICS AND THE PROTECTION OF ASSETS

After reading “What Security Executives Should Know about Ethics” by Mario Moussa, explain why security directors must have a keen understanding of the role ethics plays in an organization’s plan to protect assets and discuss the fundamental challenges confronting these security operatives, including the ethical demands resulting from the changing business environment in which they operate.

EXERCISE #2- PRIVATE-PUBLIC RELATIONSHIPS IN POLICING– EXPLORING A TRENDING MODEL TO PREVENT CRIME AND COMBAT TERRORISM

In a study conducted by Rick Ruddell, Matthew O. Thomas, and Ryan Patten entitled, “Examining the Roles of the Police and Private Security Officers in Urban Social Control,” the authors state, in part, “this study sheds light on the relationships between the police and private security, especially in regard to the formal and quasi-formal social control of urban areas. We find that the actions of private security officers augment the activities of the police, and it is likely that they will become a more important force in the future as the line between private and public policing becomes increasingly indistinct” (2010, p. 66).

“Engaging the Private Sector to Promote Homeland Security” by Andrew Morabito and Sheldon Greenberg in 2005 essentially make a similar assertion with regard to the future role private security must play in augmenting the activities of law enforcement in protecting the nation from terrorism. The authors concede there are obstacles to overcome, but the benefits of law enforcement – private security partnerships are many and must be explored and implemented to enhance our security plan.

As your last discussion topic for this course, identify and discuss in general terms the primary obstacles that must be addressed before private security-law enforcement partnerships can be fully operational and the significant benefits each of these entities could gain from each other. Also, as a security operative for a Fortune 1000 company, regardless of the risk for a terrorism event directed at your facility, explain how you would go about establishing or enhancing a partnership with law enforcement to protect your company’s assets and the assets of the larger community.

Be sure to cite your sources from both the Learning Materials and outside research.

Introduction
The retreat doctrine requires that a person must retreat from an attack if he can do so without putting himself in danger of death or serious injury. The doctrine puts a premium on human life. The stand-your-ground doctrine allows that if you did not begin the fight, you can stand your ground and use as much force as is reasonably necessary.

A person can only use self-defense to protect him/herself or another from imminent danger, real or perceived. But the presumption of perceived danger must also follow the “reasonable person” test. Although this is a subjective “feeling” on the part of the person at the time of the event, it must be deemed to be reasonable. A judge or jury, and in some high profile cases, public opinion, will “judge” your actions.

Initial Post Instructions
Look up and read your state’s self-defense revised code. Identify what does your state law provide about defense of property.

Next, research the Bernard Goetz criminal and civil cases. Do you think Mr. Goetz used justified use of self-defense or did he overreact? Was there a tipping point from self-defense to deadly assault? Why or why not? At what point? Finally, was Goetz a vigilante? Describe why or why not.

Writing Requirements

  • In addition to one initial post, respond to at least two peers.
  • Initial Post Length: minimum of 250 words
  • Secondary Post Length: minimum of 200 words per post
  • Using APA format, incorporate appropriate in-text citation(s) referring to the academic concept with corresponding references page for the initial post.

Assignment 2: LASA # 1: Literature Review Paper

For additional resources, conduct an Internet search using these keywords: writing a literature review.

Based on your review of the most recent, relevant research findings on your chosen topic, submit a final version of your literature review paper, integrating feedback received from your instructor. Be sure to include a research/focal question, synthesis of the literature you reviewed, well-established conclusions, and points of discussion and/or future research.

  • Begin the review by defining the objective of the paper. Introduce the reader to your focal question. What is this question intended to address? You may state your “question” in the form of a problem if you like. Describe the topic for your literature review and why you chose this topic. Explain why you think it is important. It is also useful to tell the reader how the review is organized in your introduction section, before you transition into the body of the review.
  • Organize your literature review paper by themes/theories/concepts, rather than article by article. If there is one major theme you want to highlight, state the theme. If there are three major themes or streams of thought on the topic, briefly name them—and then organize the balance of your literature review around those three streams. Think of themes, theories, concepts, lines of thought, and ideas as organizing strategies for your literature review. Your creativity in this assignment is not the content or findings but the clarity with which you organize the review and create a context for understanding the focal question.
  • When you are done introducing the first line of thought, create a new paragraph to discuss studies which present another line of thought or opposing view.
  • Your literature review should hit the high points of each article. You should not discuss a single article, one by one, like a grocery list. Zero in on the main theme or finding and then move on to the next theme. Remember, this is a synthesis, an integration of all the things you have learned. You are creating a discussion on paper, which in turn gives the reader a context for understanding where the scholarship has been, where it is currently, and where it likely will be heading next. Provide enough details to help the reader understand the significance of the studies you cite without “rebuilding Rome.” Be sure to evaluate the studies and offer critical comments on any shortcomings you’ve observed or that have been reported by the authors.
  • Discuss the main findings and their implications. Given the results of your literature review, what is/are the prevailing argument(s)? What research question could you ask in order to further develop this area of study and contribute to the existing body of knowledge? Complete your review by drawing conclusions about your body of research and identifying gaps in the research which still remain to be explored, maybe even by you! Make an argument as to why your research question is important and relevant to the current work being done on your topic.

Requirements

Apply current APA standards for editorial style, expression of ideas, and formatting of the text, headings, citations, and references. Remember to use your own words to describe and evaluate the articles. Avoid quoting the material and also cite works when you are discussing someone else’s ideas. Be sure to integrate any and all feedback received from your instructor. Your paper should be double-spaced and in 12 point, Times New Roman font with normal one-inch margins, written in APA style, and free of typographical and grammatical errors. It should include a title page with a running head, an abstract, and a reference page. The body of the paper should be no less than 5–6 pages in length.

Submit your review paper to the M3: Assignment 2 Dropbox by Wednesday, June 21, 2017.

2 Questions Business Law

Prison Overcrowding

Topic: Prison Overcrowding

Type of paper: Essay (any type)

Discipline: Law : Criminal Justice

Format or citation style: APA

Competencies Addressed in the Assignment
Competency 2: Explain criminal justice concepts in application based settings.
Competency 3: Apply ethical principles and standards to criminal justice issues.
Competency 4: Analyze scholarly information and research findings through critical thinking to solve problems in criminal justice.
Competency 5: Communicate in a manner that is scholarly, professional, and consistent with expectations for criminal justice professionals.
Overview
Prison overcrowding is not just a problem for prison officials. Decisions made by law makers, police, and the courts have effects throughout the whole criminal justice system. The current overcrowding problem has been influenced by intentional decisions related to public policy, enforcement efforts, sentencing guidelines, funding, and many other criminal justice decisions. This assignment will guide you to consider prison overcrowding from the perspective of a criminal justice professional.
The grading criteria for this assignment are stated explicitly in the instructions below; however, you may also want to examine the Prison Overcrowding Scoring Guide to better understand the performance levels that relate to each grading criterion. Contact your instructor if you have any questions.
Instructions
After you have watched the media scenario, Perspectives on Prison Overcrowding, place yourself in the role of one of the criminal justice professionals.
Follow the instructions bellow to complete first draft of a paper with two sections. Even though this assignment is a draft, it is very important that you complete it to the best of your ability.
Use the Prison Overcrowding Template, linked in the Resources, to organize a 4–6 page paper that includes the following:
Section 1 – Perspectives
To demonstrate the grading criterion, “Analyze a criminal justice situation from a particular career perspective,” view the prison overcrowding situation from the particular perspective of the criminal justice role you are most interested in, and address the following:
How did the character in your chosen role view the situation differently from the characters in other roles?
What more might the character in your role need to know to further identify problems?
What are the biggest challenges the character in your role faces in the prison overcrowding situation?
How might the character in your role prioritize proposed solutions differently than other roles (such as the need to uphold prisoners’ rights and human dignity versus the need for public safety)?
Section 2 – Solutions
From the solutions in the media piece, Perspectives on Prison Overcrowding, choose three of the potential solutions to prison overcrowding that might have the most relevance to the character role you have chosen. Address the following:
To demonstrate the grading criterion, “Evaluate the viability of solutions to a criminal justice situation and their impact on a selected role”:
Provide a brief analysis and summary of the solutions.
Explain why you chose these three solutions.
Assess how practical and beneficial each solution would be, and how it would affect your character’s job. Identify challenges that your character will have in implementing the solutions. Be sure you explain the reasons behind each of your judgments.
To demonstrate the grading criterion, “Evaluate ethical considerations related to solutions for prison overcrowding,” apply principles that you learned in Unit 5 to point out any that each solution might involve challenges, compromises, or dilemmas regarding fairness, justice, or what is right.
To demonstrate the grading criterion, “Communicate effectively in writing,” write clearly, with correct spelling, grammar, syntax, and good organization, following APA guidelines. Use the resources in the Academic Skill Building study to assist you in organizing and formatting your assignment.
To demonstrate the grading criterion, “Properly organize written content in APA format,” include the following in your paper:
Title page.
Introduction.
Note: The word Introduction is not used as a heading in APA format. Instead, the title of the paper is used for the heading.
Perspectives section.
Solutions section.
Conclusion (that brings all main points together and reaches a final conclusion about the issue).
Reference page.
Be sure that all written content correctly organized within this structure, in compliance with APA guidelines. The template provided in the Resources will help you comply with APA style.
To demonstrate the grading criterion, “Support solutions with credible journal and Internet sources,” include information from at least one library and one Internet article to support your solutions. Provide in-text citations and references for sources.
Your completed assignment should be 4–6 pages in length of content, not counting the title page and reference page. Be sure you follow APA guidelines for formatting and referencing your resources.
Requirements
This section appears at the end of each set of assignment instructions. It provides the specific details of expectations for the assignment.
Written communication: Should be free of errors that detract from the overall message. Use spell check in Word to confirm spelling and grammar.
Font and font size: Use Times New Roman, 12 point.
Length:  4–6 pages not counting title page and reference page, double spaced.

Assignment 2: Midweek Production Assignment: Right of Pregnant Women to Work

Alpha Beta Inc. is a nationwide company headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. A company policy prohibits pregnant women from working in their dry cleaning plants. These jobs are the highest paid within the company. A group of women who want to sue the company come to your law firm.

Your attorney asks you to research the issue and draft a memorandum of law. The memorandum should be no less than a three to five page paper, but no more than 1,750 words, double-spaced. In your memorandum, identify if this is a gender-discrimination issue, a pregnancy-discrimination issue, or both. Discuss the issue of paternalism in employment decision-making. Include citations to relevant case law and statutes using the Bluebook citation format. You need not address the issue of class certification, but only the issue of whether or not the company can legitimately prohibit pregnant women from working in the dry-cleaning plants.

Make sure to use correct spelling, grammar, and concise language.

On a separate page, cite all sources using the Bluebook format.

need to give me in 8 hours

1700-2000 word position paper, in which you review several possible approaches to an issue of corporate law and make an evaluation of whether a particular proposal is both possible and advisable.

On September 17, 2018, Jeff Van Duzer was the guest speaker in BLAW 461. As you may recall from that class session, Van Duzer is the author of a book, Why Business Matters to God, in which he makes a theological case for what the purpose of business should be. Van Duzer’s position, paraphrased for simplicity, is as follows:

The purpose of business is to: 1) provide goods and services that enable the community to flourish; and 2) provide opportunities for employees to have meaningful work that will allow them to express their God-given creativity. Van Duzer is clear in his writings that he does not view profit maximization as a legitimate purpose of business. In fact, he would argue that any business that is focused on profits rather than providing pro-social goods and services and meaningful work for employees is not doing what God desires for the world.

This is a controversial assertion, as Van Duzer knows, yet it is one that he has defended in numerous forums.Your task in completing this project is to make two evaluations:

1. Is Van Duzer’s proposal legally allowable under the current state of corporate law? If it is not currently allowable, what would need to happen for it to be legal?

2. Is Van Duzer’s proposal advisable, from at least the following perspectives?

a. Capital and financial markets (i.e., Will a company that is managed in the manner Van Duzer proposes be able to attract investors and lenders?)

b. Customers (i.e., Will customers want to buy goods and services from a company that has some purpose other than profit maximization?)

c. Managers and workers (i.e., Will people want to work for a company like this, and how would employees with those motivations be managed?)

There are numerous resources in the Major Project #2 file folder in Canvas. I expect you to cite and make use of all the posted materials. You will also want to do additional outside research. The first question (Is Van Duzer’s approach allowed by law?) is exceptionally hard to answer in a succinct manner, and I expect you will need to do considerable thinking and writing on this subject. An easy answer to that question is probably wrong, because it would fail to do justice to the complexity of the issue.

Grading Criteria

I will grade your written materials based on the following criteria:

1. Have you written a sufficiently lengthy and well-though-out essay? It must be 1700-2000 words.

2. How close to perfection is your grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.?

3.How coherent, consistent, and logical are your positions on the two questions noted above?

4. How well have you incorporated a discussion of the various legal standards in making your evaluation? In other words, you must cite all of the readings

in your evaluative paper and make extensive use of those sources in your analysis.

5. Have you taken a firm, identifiable position on whether Van Duzer’s approach is legally allowed, and whether it is advisable?

6.How well have you anticipated potential objections to your position? Because multiple positions are represented in the legal literature on

corporate purpose, you must acknowledge that positions contrary to your ultimate conclusion are plausible, yet explain why the objections to your evaluation are unconvincing.

7. How extensively have you discussed the secondary authorities (journal articles, etc.) in arriving at your defensible conclusion?

8.You may complete this assignment in groups of three students or less. All students who complete the assignment in groups will receive the same grade, regardless of their level of contribution to the assignment. There is no requirement that you complete the assignment in a group, however, and I presume that some students will want to complete it by themselves.
