Weeks 1 and 2 PICOT Presentation B

In your upcoming Advanced Practice Nursing Practicum and Culminating Experience courses, you will be asked to develop a change project and to implement this project in the field. To review the early steps in the research process, we have developed a mini-practice research assignment to prepare you. During this lesson, you will use the PICOT questioning format/formula to develop an answerable research question. All elements are listed below:

  • P: Population/disease (age, gender, ethnicity, disorder)
  • I: Intervention or variable of interest (exposure to a disease, risk behavior, prognostic factor)
  • C: Comparison (a placebo or “business as usual” such as no disease, absence of risk factor, or prognostic factor B)
  • O: Outcome (risk of disease, accuracy of a diagnosis, rate of occurrence of adverse outcome)
  • T: Time (the time it takes to demonstrate an outcome; e.g., the time it takes for the intervention to achieve an outcome or how long participants are observed)

Prepare an evidence-based practice (EBP) presentation on a topic of your choice that is relevant to advanced nursing practice education, leadership, quality improvement, or change.

Your presentation should include:

  1. Identification of an advanced practice nursing issue or practice problem of concern
  2. Design a research question using the PICOT format
  3. A brief literature review and findings related to best practices with at least three scholarly resources cited in APA (6th ed.) format
  4. Plan, Do, Study, Act Process that could be used
  5. Any implications that the investigation might have for nursing practice
  6. Your presentation—created using the Kaltura recording tool—should include, audio, video, and either an integrated PowerPoint presentation or a recording using visual aids

     MAIN POSTING 6050

Evaluation is an invaluable component of all policy programs.  It provides data, commentary, and critical evidence for ongoing improvement, enhancement, and effectiveness of programs. It helps policymakers, administrators, clinicians, financial stakeholders, and the public understand what works and what needs to change to improve the health and well-being of individuals and communities (Milstead & Short, 2019).

There are some opportunities that exists for RN and APRNs to actively participate in policy review.  One of such opportunity is by joining a professional organization, these organizations often have lobbyists that bring nursing issues to Capitol Hill.  An example of such an organization is the American Nurses Association (ANA) which helps the RNs and the APRNs to understand how they can engage in policy review.  Nurses can participate in policy review on local, state, and federal levels (American Nurses Association, 2020).

Another opportunity for RNs and APRNs to participate in policy review is through the workplace. The nurses are professionals who have the responsibility and capacity to influence the existing healthcare delivery programs.  A major role of the RNs and APRNs is to promote quality health and this can be achieved by participating in policy review.  Nonetheless, these opportunities have their challenges.  Some nurses do not want to belong to professional organizations due to financial obligations and time constraints.  In the workplace, nurses are not even aware of the policies that need to be reviewed.

Strategies to better advocate for or communicate the existence of these opportunities to participate in policy review is to create awareness of the benefits of professional organizations to nurses. Nursing schools need to include healthcare policy education as part of their curriculum as well as encourage some form of political involvement.  Employers need to provide nurses with the time and resources to help them participate in policy review.  According to Laureate Education (2018), policy evaluation helps us to know if we are achieving our goals, if we are off the mark, and how we can improve.

  • Cost of end of life care.
  • Costs of drugs in the United States as compared to other countries.
  • Quarantine of health care workers that have been exposed to communicable diseases.
  • Medical care for illegal immigrants.
  • Right to die with euthanasia methods.
  • Disclosure of medical records of pilots and other safety sensitive professionals and HIPAA violations.
  • Restrictions of roles of nurse practitioners and advanced practice nurses in certain states.
  • Health care reform.
  • Requirements of meaningful use to meet core measures.
  • ICD-10 issues.

For this activity, you will create a short, annotated bibliography (summary of articles) from the university library.

  • Using the school’s online library, conduct an advanced search on the seven conflict models listed above.
  • Narrow your search by selecting more than one field type (e.g., subject and keyword).
  • Select three scholarly and peer-reviewed articles and compose a paper with the following information:
    • APA Style in-text with corresponding reference list citations for each article.
    • A one- to two-paragraph narrative that summarizes the key details of each article.

For information on annotated bibliographies and APA Style, review Hacker and Sommers’ (2019) resource, A Pocket Style Manual: APA Version (available in VitalSource).

Some of you have mentioned presenting information to the CEO, CNO or administration as your internal source. Do you feel that you would be given an opportunity to do so or is this something that will be presented through your chain of command? For example, you present to your manager and they take it further up?

Principles of Ethics 445N

Week 2 Assignment: Religion and Ethics

Required Resources
Read/review the following resources for this activity:

  • Textbook: Chapters 3, 4
  • Lesson
  • Minimum of 2 scholarly sources (in addition to the textbook)

Ebook attached below:

Rachels, S., & Rachels, J. (2019). The elements of moral philosophy (9th ed.).

Review the following ethical dilemmas:

  1. John Doe has decided to clone himself. He is sterile. He cannot find anyone to marry him. He wishes to have children. He knows that he will not be able to love a child that is adopted or not connected directly to him biologically. He will be making use of a new procedure that involves taking his skin cells to produce a twin. The twin starts out as an embryo and grows into a child. The child in this case will have the same genetic information as John Doe. John Doe and his child will be twins.
  2. Jane Doe is eighteen. For as long as she can remember she has been sexually attracted to other females. Her parents belong to a religion that has a religious text stating that God forbids one to be a lesbian. This religion goes on further to say that lesbians will be punished in the afterlife. Jane Doe is debating whether she should tell her parents about her sexual attraction. She has not yet decided if she should come out to her parents and live as a lesbian now that she is a legal adult.
  3. Joe and Mary are a couple. Before becoming sterile, they had a child. This child died of a rare disease. Joe and Mary miss their child terribly. They have heard that there is a new IVF procedure that can ensure that they can have another child. However, their religion forbids using IVF.
Use the resources assigned for this week and additional research,

Select two of the situations above and then address 2 of the following:

  1. What is the relation between ethics and religion? Formulate and investigate the relation.
  2. For each case, determine the ethical path of conduct. Then, determine what paths of conduct would be unethical
  3. For each case, what would an emotivism say to appraise what you determine is the ethical form of conduct?
  4. For each case, would a natural law ethicist agree with what you say is the ethical form of conduct? Why or why not?
  5. Articulate, explain, and evaluate in each case an approach that makes use of divine command ethics.
