The Academic Success and Professional Development Plan created in this course is one strategy for including academic accomplishments in the development of professional goals. This plan is a vision blueprint, identifying tools and strategies to bridge scholarly work into professional success. This blueprint for success ensures preparation to bring visions into focus and make them a reality (Laureate Education, 2018a). The development of this plan so far has helped me identify key players in my network, academic tools available to help me succeed, and professional resources that enhance integrity of practice. The next step in the plan, before finalization, is the development of an academic portfolio. This in itself is another strategy that will bridge academic success into professional practice.

Creating an academic portfolio is an evidence-based strategy designed to merge academic success into the development of professional goals. With a complex and competitive job market, e-portfolios facilitate a new way for grad students to stand out in these technological times (Leahy & Filiatrault, 2017). Thanks to technology and e-portfolios, applicants can often make a first impression before ever having an initial face-to-face meeting. According to Burns (2018), three reasons to create a portfolio include self-promotion to show accomplishments, evidence of outcomes to display competencies, and structure and direction to describe professional goals. A nursing portfolio may contain several elements and can be tailored to emphasize top individual qualities and characteristics.

These two strategies align with Walden University’s commitment to social change. The Academic Success and Professional Development Plan aligns with the social change emphasis when it includes areas for serving communities, building professions, and partnering with professional organizations (Laureate Education, 2018b). This plan helps translate a passion for social change into action steps that create social change. Walden University emphasizes the value of social change as well as the value of creating an academic e-portfolio. Students are more likely to create an academic e-portfolio when they understand the benefits (Ahmed & Ward, 2016). One of the benefits of academic e-portfolios is in connecting students with organizations that have a shared passion for a particular area of social change. For example, I can emphasize my passion for creating community resilience in my e-portfolio and send it to an organization that I know shares the same passion. An e-portfolio that illustrates a shared passion will likely give me a head-start in the interview process.

Learning is acquiring knowledge and skills that can be transferred to situations in the non-academic world. It is about applying the concepts learned. Through the study of psychology information has been gathered about information processing and improving learning and memory.

For this assignment you will do some research and create a Power Point presentation meeting the following criteria:

  1. Your presentation will have a Title Slide and a reference slide. These do not count in the total required. (total-2 slides)
  2. You will include 1 slide that explains the information processing model. You will create 1 slide that explains how that model has evolved over time. (total-2 slides)
  3. Discuss how the two-track mind helps individuals to encode, retain and recall information. (1-2 slides)
  4. How does the brain retain information using implicit and explicit memory systems? Discuss how emotions and changes at the synapse level impact memory processing (1-2 slides)
  5. Discuss techniques to improve memory and study habits. Provide at least five suggestions. (1-2 slides)

Your full Power Point will consist of 7-10 slides, with a minimum of 2 resources (1 article, course textbook). Each side will have images directly related to the content. Each slide will include notes in the Speaker Notes that explain the slide as if you were teaching it someone else.

Assignment Expectations

Length: 15 slides including both images and texts. Notes for each slide that provide a full description of the slide.

Structure: Because a good presentation has few words on the slides include a script in the notes section of the Power Point for each slide with the verbiage you would use as if you were teaching the information. The script/notes should be a minimum of 30-50 words that clearly express the important points of each slide. These may be in the Speaker Notes section of the slides or submitted separately in a Word document.

References: A minimum of two (2) scholarly reference, including the textbook. APA should be used for in-text citations and references.

Search the GCU Library and find one new health care article that uses quantitative research. Do not use an article from a previous assignment, or that appears in the Topic Materials or textbook.

Complete an article analysis and ethics evaluation of the research using the “Article Analysis and Evaluation of Research Ethics” template. See Chapter 5 of your textbook as needed, for assistance.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Capstone Project Change Proposal Presentation

Review the feedback on the change proposal professional presentation and make required adjustments to the presentation. Present your evidence-based intervention and change proposal to an interprofessional audience of leaders and stakeholders. Be prepared to answer questions and accept feedback.

After presenting your capstone project change proposal, write a 250-350 word summary of the presentation. Include a description of the changes that were suggested by your preceptor before your presentation and how you incorporated that feedback. Describe how this interprofessional collaboration improved the effectiveness of your presentation. Include a description of the feedback and questions from your audience after your presentation, and how this experience will affect your professional practice in the future.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

Case Study Analysis: Advanced Patho

An understanding of the factors surrounding women’s and men’s health, infections, and hematologic disorders can be critically important to disease diagnosis and treatment in these areas. This importance is magnified by the fact that some diseases and disorders manifest differently based on the sex of the patient.  Effective disease analysis often requires an understanding that goes beyond the human systems involved. The impact of patient characteristics, as well as racial and ethnic variables, can also have an important impact. An understanding of the symptoms of alterations in systems based on these characteristics is a critical step in diagnosis and treatment of many diseases. For APRNs, this understanding can also help educate patients and guide them through their treatment plans.

In this Assignment, you examine a case study and analyze the symptoms presented. You identify the elements that may be factors in the diagnosis, and you explain the implications to patient health.

Assignment (2-page case study analysis)

In your Case Study Analysis related to the scenario provided, explain the following:

· Anemia and the different kinds of anemia (i.e., micro and macrocytic).

You may also want to briefly explain:

· The factors that affect fertility (STDs).

· Why inflammatory markers rise in STD/PID.

· Why prostatitis and infection happens. Also explain the causes of systemic reaction.

· Why a patient would need a splenectomy after a diagnosis of ITP.

Case Study:

67-year-old female presents with chief complaint of shortness of breath, fatigue, weakness, unintentional weight loss, and mild numbness in her feet. She states she feels unsteady when she walks. PMH includes hypothyroidism well controlled on Synthroid 100 mcg/day. No hx of HTN or CHF.

Vital signs: Temp 98.7 F, pulse 118, Respirations 22, BP 108/64, PaO2 95% on room air.

Physical exam revealed pale, anxious female appearing older than stated years.

HEENT- pale conjunctiva of eyes and pale palate. Tongue beefy red and slightly swollen with loss of normal rugae. Turbinates pale but no swelling. Thyroid palpable but no nodules felt. No lymph nodes palpated.

Cardiac-regular rate and rhythm with soft II/VI systolic murmur. Respiratory- lungs clear with no adventitious breath sounds. Abdomen-soft, non-tender with positive bowel sounds. Liver edge palpated two finger breadths below right costal margin. Lab data- hgb, hct, reticulocyte count, serum B12 levels low, mean corpuscle volume, plasma iron, and ferritin levels high, folate, TIBC are normal.

Reminder: The College of Nursing requires that all papers submitted include a title page, introduction, summary, and references.

This week’s textbook reading presented ethics and legal issues in nursing. What ethical dilemma, encountered in your nursing experience, has affected you most? What have you learned from the situation?

Discussion: Health Care Costs and Product Differentiation

APRN Board of Nursing Regulations in Kansas and Missouri

MAIN QUESTION POST- Throughout history, defining APRNs scope of practice has been an ongoing issue in different states. According to Loversidge (2019), “the actual practice acts are inevitably a product of individual states’ political forces, so titles, definitions, criteria for entrance into practice, scopes of practice, reimbursement policies, and models of regulation are state-specific” (p.63). APRN regulations are state-specific and can differ in multiple ways. In Kansas, it is important to know the license renewal regulations. When renewing your license in Kansas, you must complete 30 hours of continuing nursing education about the advanced practice registered nurses role (“Kansas Administrative Regulations,” n.d.). Also, you can’t roll-over continuing nursing educations hours from different years. If the Kansas Board of Nursing asks for proof of the education you completed, you must provide it. As an APRN in Kansas, when prescribing controlled substances, you must put the D.E.A. registration number issued to the advanced practice registered nurse (“Kansas Administrative Regulations,” n.d.). When prescribing medications, it is crucial to know the rules behind what an APRN can and cannot prescribe and the correct way to fill out prescriptions.

In Missouri, as an APRN, you do not have to do continuing nursing education hours to renew your license. Also, in Missouri, APRNs do not have the authority to prescribe schedule II controlled substances. Only being one state apart shows that each state defines its regulations for APRNs. In Missouri, when renewing your license, you need to know your “RN license expires every odd-numbered year on April 30th and you must keep your RN license current to maintain your APRN recognition (“State of Missouri Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Document of Recognition Renewal Instructions,” n.d.). In Kansas, when renewing your license, you need to know “advanced practice registered nurse licenses shall be renewed on the same biennial cycle as the cycle for the registered professional nurse licensure renewal” (“Kansas Administrative Regulations,” n.d.). As you can see, each state has specific regulations on when to renew your license, which shows the importance of researching your state board of nursing regulations.

Regulations for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs): Legal Authority to Practice

When it comes to allowing full practice authority for APRNs it differs from state to state.  Not all states allow full practice authority as an APRN and this causes a barrier to the accessibility and affordability to health services for low income citizens (Bosse et al., 2017).With the shortage of primary care doctors, the states that do not allow full practice authority limit healthcare access to their vulnerable populations (Bosse et al., 2017).  The regulations of license renewal requirements and the ability to prescribe controlled substances apply to all APRNs, depending on their educations and state laws. Even though they differ by state, APRNs need to abide by the rules for renewing and keeping their current licenses, such as through education hours and meeting renewal deadlines. When prescribing controlled medications following the rules for what to write, such as DEA numbers or the physician they are working under, is essential for APRNs. Researching and understanding your state board of nursing APRN regulations is crucial for your success in your career as an APRN.

Comparison between South Carolina and North Carolina Nursing Regulations

South Carolina, my home state, is a part of AANP Region 4, which includes KY, NC, SC and TN.

Nurse Practitioner in South Carolina

Practice Authority

Written protocol with a physician is required. The protocol must outline information for delegated medical acts and a description of how consultation with the physician is provided. The protocol must be reviewed annually.

Prescriptive Authority

Drugs and devices prescribed must be within the NP’s specialty and listed in the written protocol developed by the NP and the supervising physician. An NP may also prescribe Schedules II-V controlled substances.

Nurse Practitioner as a Primary Care Provider

NPs are recognized in state policy as primary care providers. The South Carolina Medicaid Provider Manual lists the provider types that may enroll as a primary care provider.

(Scope of Practice Policy.2020)

Nurse Practitioner in North Carolina

Practice Authority

Collaborative practice agreement required between the NP and the supervising physician. The agreement must establish minimum standards of consultation and must be reviewed yearly.

Prescriptive Authority

The drugs and devices an NP may prescribe must be outlined in the collaborative practice agreement. Schedules II-V controlled substances may be prescribed if outlined in the agreement.

Nurse Practitioner as a Primary Care Provider

NPs are recognized in state policy as primary care providers. Primary care means preventive, diagnostic, treatment, consultant, referral and other services rendered by physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners.

(Scope of Practice Policy.2020)

In the states of South Carolina and North Carolina nurse practitioners are not allowed to practice to their full scope of practice without the oversight of a Medical doctor. As far as I can tell through some research is that only 14 states allow for nurse practitioners to practice without physician oversight. These states include Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Washington, Wyoming. (Beckers, 2019). While I feel that having no limits on my education and training in the practice setting, I think that have a physician to collaborate with will help me with the anxiety of being an autonomous provider. I might can see where this may get redundant when becoming a more experienced family nurse practitioner. In both SC and NC, the NP can prescribe Schedules II-V controlled substances within the scope of the agreement guidelines with overseeing physicians. Both states only allow for no more than a 30-day supply of these medications. It is the position of AANP that NP prescriptive authority be solely regulated by state boards of nursing and in accordance with the NP role, education and certification. (AAPN.2020). Both states recognize nurse practitioners as a primary care provider. Therefore, allowing reimbursement from Medicaid and Medicare and private insurance companies. For nurse practitioners wanting to open their own practice in the states of NC and SC would have to live with in 45 miles of the overseeing physician. If this were one’s goal to own their own practice it would probably be a lot less headache to do so in one of the states that allow full scope of practice with out an agreement with a physician.
